Iran’s New Supreme Leader Signals Hardline Stance in First Message

In his first public message since being chosen as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei delivered a forceful statement suggesting that Tehran has no intention of easing tensions in its ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel.

On March 12, the son of the late Ali Khamenei addressed the nation for the first time after Iran’s Assembly of Experts selected him to succeed his father. Instead of appearing on television, his message was read by a broadcaster while the Iranian flag and his portrait were displayed on screen. The speech quickly drew widespread attention both inside and outside the country, as it outlined the new leader’s approach to domestic stability and regional confrontation.

Throughout the message, Khamenei used symbolic language aimed at rallying public support and reinforcing national unity. At the same time, he made it clear that Iran would not pursue reconciliation with its adversaries. According to the new Supreme Leader, retaliation remains a central priority after the war has caused devastating personal losses for him, including the deaths of his father and several members of his family.

“Iran has only carried out a small part of its revenge,” the statement said. “Retaliation will remain a priority until justice is fully achieved.”

Khamenei also referred to a recent attack on a school in the southern city of Minab. Iranian authorities accuse Washington of launching the airstrike, which reportedly killed at least 175 people, describing it as a deliberate act. U.S. officials say the incident is under investigation, while some American media outlets have suggested the building may have been mistaken for a military facility during strikes conducted by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets.
